Victoria's Secret has announced its in your face love affair with young tarts is over. It's cheatin' days are over. The 1000 store chain wants to return to its high school sweet heart. The Girl Next Door.
So says the CEO of the Limited Brands who told financial analysts last week that the reason their net sales dropped 12% in the 4th quarter and 8% in 2007was the retailer had become "too sexy."
Their 1999 Super Bowl Ad is ranked as one of the top 10 sleaziest of all time
Victoria's Secret “Fashion Show” (1999): Advertising for a web-only lingerie fashion show, scores of scantily-clad models traipse in front of the camera. “The Broncos won’t be there. The Falcons won’t be there,” the text scrolling by says. “You won’t care.” Victoria's Secret later claims 1.2 million visitors to its web site. (A 30-second ad in 1999 cost $1.6 million.)
That was the last Super Bowl Ad for Victoria's Secret until this year...where they displayed their new toned down image.
Oh, and in another effort to win back the hearts of their jilted consumers, Victoria's Secret has been test marketing a brand of sportswear.
