A friend of mine recently sent me a link to a Snopes.com post confirming that a bank in England actually did send out customer letters addressed to "Dear Rich Bastard." It happened in 1997. The question is have companies learned their lesson or have similar goofs happened more recently?
Here is what happened in 1997.
In the original telling of this gaffe, the programmer was fired. That did not actually happen. And, according to Snopes, far fewer than 2,000 Dear Rich Bastard letters were mailed.
The snopes post also includes a very funny example of a mailing mishap with Geraldine Ferraro's 1984 campaign where people who were supposed to be addressed as Mrs. ended up with the salutation "Rabbi" and anyone who was supposed to be addressed as Mr. saw a greeting that said, " Dear Colonel,"
So, dou have any mailing mishaps to share and what advice do you have to make sure you never send a "Dear Rich Bastard" communication?
